Arsenal given transfer boost as Atletico Madrid fail with £114m star's please that Edu can fulfil

Arsenal finished the summer transfer window with just Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah as the forward options going into the season. A lot of pressure has been placed on both forwards with a heavy fixture schedule due to the Europa League.

However, both strikers started in the Gunners’ 1-0 Europa League group stage victory against PSV Eindhoven on Thursday evening. It was the first time that the pair started in a competitive game together this season. This was then followed up as the pair played together in Arsenal’s draw against Southampton in the following Sunday.

If this becomes a regular occurrence, then it could open up a new transfer possibility for Edu, as an additional forward would need to be signed. Atletico Madrid’s damning European situation could give Arsenal a chance to sign Joao Felix in the upcoming transfer window.

Atletico Madrid crashed out of the Champions League group stages in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night, as Yannick Carrasco’s last-minute penalty miss meant that La Liga side drew 2-2 with Bayer Leverkusen, despite needing a win to stay in the competition.

Felix started the crucial game on the substitutes and was only used as a late sub in the match. Not starting from the beginning whistle has been a regular theme for the Portuguese international in recent times, as Simeone has struggled to fit him into his system.

It could be because of this that Spanish news outlet Marca reported Felix wants to leave Atletico Madrid this winter. His agent Jorge Mendes is already looking for a new club.

Premier League clubs such as Manchester United have been linked to the forward, and according to Spanish news outlet El Chringuito, Arsenal are also interested in signing the young star.

The forward was highly touted by Europe’s biggest clubs after his amazing Europa League run with Benfica during the 2018/2019 season. It was Atletico Madrid who signed him later in that summer for a blockbuster £114m transfer, as the youngster was tipped to become one of the world’s best players.

However, since joining the La Liga side his growth has taken a hit due to a clash in the style of play between him and Simeone, which has not been helped by the delay in injuries. Despite the differences between the player and the manager, Felix has still displayed glimpses of the quality he can bring when given the freedom to express himself.

Arsenal currently sit at the top of the Premier League table and have a seven-point safety zone from dropping out of the Champions League places. Whereas, Atletico Madrid sit in third place and a single defeat could see them drop out of qualification for European qualification.

This is potentially significant in the potential pursuit for Felix because in April of this year, GOAL had reported that if Atletico Madrid do not qualify for the Champions League next season then Jorge Mendes will push for Felix’s departure ahead of next season.

With La Liga side already out of this year’s Champions League and potential qualification for next year looking less secure than Arsenal’s, it bodes a great chance for Edu to push to sign Felix in January.
