Arsenal surprise £27million transfer set for repeat as Edu Gaspar finishes window strongly

Arsenal have smashed the doors open of this summer’s transfer window and they’re not done yet. Three big signings in Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice are secure and the need to thin the squad by moving on some expendable talent is underway.

However, the incomings might not yet be over. In fact, there’s scope for multiple additions should the outgoings include some key figures like Thomas Partey, Kieran Tierney and Folarin Balogun. All three have been linked with high-profile moves away from the club and Partey and Balogun in particular are the latest players with potential offers expected to arrive soon.

If there is the opportunity to strengthen, then the club may look to continue on the route of some of their previously understated deals. Moves which have drawn attention for their shrewdness and subsequent impact.

January saw two of these arrivals in the £27million signing of Leandro Trossard and the £12million transfer from Chelsea of Jorginho. Both players lacked the ‘X-factor’ that a £100million-plus deal like Declan Rice or the attempted moves for Mykhailo Mudryk and Moises Caicedo would have brought.

However, both players had a key role in the second half of the season and their quality has added significant depth. So much so that Trossard became the key centre-forward figure in Gabriel Jesus’ absence after ousting Eddie Nketiah, and Jorginho managed to displace Partey at the end of the season.

But who could the player or players be that fall into these categories? Looking into the areas that might need strengthening, again we come back to the midfield and the defence.

There’s been scope to add a right-back who offers something different to the hybrid styles of Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu and now Jurrien Timber. football.londonunderstands the interest in Jeremie Frimpong is genuine but the Dutchman does not necessarily fall into the category of shrewd signing like Trossard.

These are perhaps more Premier League players who can be snatched up with the allure of a move to Arsenal. Or, potentially, like Jorginho, already at a big club but lacking game time and open to a chance in north London.

At right-back, now relegated Southampton could hold the key with Tino Livramento. He spent the majority of last season out after suffering a serious knee injury but the England Under-21s international will be back ready for the new season and perhaps something of an opportunity signing.

In midfield, it is trickier. The club are linked with a move for Romeo Lavia which is much for of the investment in youth that the club embarked upon three summers ago.

With Partey leaving, the club are losing one of the more experienced heads. A player who has shone since Brentford’s promotion to the Premier League is Christian Norgaard.

The 29-year-old Danish international has played at a Premier League level for the past two seasons and is a mainstay in the Bees’ midfield. If a reasonable fee could be agreed between the sides, Norgaard might be the savvy piece of Trossard-esque business needed to reinforce the group.
